Preserving Asparagus: The Different Techniques

Drying Method

You can dry asparagus to remove its water content and delay the growth of bacteria. It is a method that has been used by man for a long, long time now. Aside from preserving goods, drying also reduces the weight of the produce making it easier to transport. Aside from asparagus, most vegetables, meat and fruits can also be dried.

Freezing Method

Freezing is commonly used both commercially and domestically. When done properly, food products can last a long, long time which is very useful in cases of national emergencies.

Canning and Bottling Method

Cooking asparagus before sealing them in cans and jars helps in weakening bacteria prolonging the food’s “life span.” Asparagus must be boiled longer compared to other produce such as strawberries. Acidic elements like vinegar or lemon must also be added to it in order to prevent early spoilage.

Adding Sugar

Did you know that aside from salt, you can also use sugar to preserve food? If you haven’t, take a look at canned fruits with syrups in them, candied peels and ginger, glazed cherries and a whole lot more. These products are all preserved mainly with the use of sugar.
